Wrong Advice
“Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, or set foot on the path of sinners, or sit in the seat of mockers.” – Psalm 1:1
The company we keep and the advice we follow determine the trajectory of our lives. Advice is never neutral. Advice is powerful—it shapes our decisions, influence our emotions, and alters the course of life.
When advice is misguided or careless, the consequences could be immense. Wrong advice is never trivial—it can reshape destiny, reorder trust, and sever our bond with God. What may seem like a harmless suggestion can carry eternal consequences, as seen in the garden when Eve listened to the serpent’s deceptive counsel. Advice has the power to redirect the course of a life, either toward blessing or toward brokenness.
Every word of counsel plants a seed in our mind. Some seeds grow into wisdom, resilience, and success; others grow into regret, confusion, and harm. Who we are today is, in many ways, the sum total of the voices we chose to listen to yesterday. The counsel we accept today becomes the foundation of tomorrow’s reality. Misguided counsel can lead to consequences that are not only unfavorable but sometimes irreversible.
In Genesis 3, Eve listened to the serpent’s deceptive words, which contradicted God’s clear command. By obeying that wrong counsel, humanity’s place in God’s divine order was disrupted. The serpent twisted God’s words, planting doubt and presenting disobedience as wisdom.
That wrong advice didn’t just lead to a bad choice—it shattered humanity’s relationship with God, bringing shame, separation, and death. That moment became the archetype of how listening to ungodly counsel can derail lives, families, and nations. The fall of man teaches us that advice is a spiritual force that can either uphold God’s divine order or shatter it.
The
Dangers of Wrong Advice
- Spiritual: It distances us from God’s
Word and His blessing.
- Relational: It can fracture trust and
destroy relationships.
- Financial: Poor counsel can lead to ruin
and loss.
- Emotional: Wrong advice often leaves
regret, guilt, and diminished self-esteem.
In severe cases, the emotional toll can lead to anxiety or depression, highlighting the profound psychological impact that wrong advice can carry. Psalm 1:1 paints a vivid picture of how wrong advice entangles a person:
The Stages of Influence
- Walking in the counsel of the
wicked: Wrong
advice begins by shaping how we think and the paths we choose.
- Standing in the way of sinners: Once advice takes root, it
affects our behavior and lifestyle.
- Sitting in the seat of mockers: Wrong advice hardens
the heart, leading to rebellion against God.
“Blessed”, as used in Psalm 1, means more than simple happiness—it refers to a deep, God-given joy, favor, and flourishing that comes from living in alignment with God’s ways. It is the state of being rightly ordered under His guidance, enjoying His approval and protection.
This
blessing is relational—it flows from walking with God and rejecting the counsel
of the wicked. It sets the tone for the entire book of Psalms: true joy and
prosperity are found in God’s way, not in worldly paths.
Responsibility
in Listening
Listening is
an act of responsibility. To become who we want to be tomorrow, we must be
careful about the advice we accept today. It’s not just about hearing—it’s
about discerning, questioning, and aligning guidance with our deeper purpose.
Not all
voices deserve authority in our lives. Wrong advice can derail us, while wise
counsel can lift us higher. As we inch close to a new year, let us pause and reflect on the voices that have shaped us in the past and those we will allow to influence us in the future. Listening responsibly means filtering advice
through wisdom, truth, and God’s Word.
Hope
Beyond Wrong Advice
The comforting truth is that God offers redemption. No matter how deep the pit wrong advice might put us, God’s truth and mercy provide a way out. His Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105). His mercy lifts us from the mire and sets our feet upon solid ground (Psalm 40:2). Where wrong voices lead us astray, God’s voice restores, redeems, and realigns us with His divine order.
By anchoring ourselves in His Word, seeking wisdom, and listening responsibly, we can walk in blessing, stability, and divine favor. His truth corrects, His mercy heals, and His wisdom guides us back to blessing. Wrong advice carries dangerous weight, but God’s truth and mercy are greater. He offers restoration, even when yesterday’s counsel has led us into today’s pit.
