As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron axhead fell into the water. “Oh no, my lord!” he cried out. “It was borrowed!” The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick and threw it there and made the iron float. – 2 Kings 6:5-6 The moment the young prophet’s axe head flew into the Jordan in 2 Kings 6:5, something symbolic happened. His effectiveness disappeared. His ability to contribute vanished. His confidence broke. The axe head represented his ability to make a meaningful impact, to shape something, to build, to contribute to the collective mission. When it disappeared into the river, it exposed a truth many believers face: you can be busy swinging, active in ministry, surrounded by purpose, yet suddenly lose the very thing that makes your effort fruitful.
